Goat Format Championship 25 Deck Tech: Fire Cat OTK

GFC 25 proved to be an amazing event with some creative decks being showcased in one of the largest events of the year. Just look at Void's cool take on the Rescue Cat OTK strategy!

​Overview

Traditionally, rescue cat combo decks use Rescue Cat in combination with Last Will to swarm the field with monsters and attempt to kill the opponent in a single swing. Usually, Cat itself will grab multiple copies of Milus Radiant, which will boost each other, as well as whatever Last Will grabs. Gyaku-Gire Panda or Des Wombat are the most common targets for the spell card. It is also common for Cat lists to play burn cards like Just Desserts or Secret Barrel to make it easier to finish off the opponent, though this is not always the case.Void's list changes things up a bit. Instead of focusing on Milus Radiant and Earth monsters in general, they have chosen instead to turn up the heat with Little Chimera and a barrage of fire monsters. This gives access to the Ultimate Baseball Kid off of Last Will. The little slugger can hit hard with an attack, and then tribute off monsters for a clean kill afterwards.  ​ 

Player Insight

​I decided to take this deck to the tournament with me today, because this is a FIRE based deck that I believe has potential. I built the initial variant a few years back and haven't played much with it as my focus has mainly been on WATER strategies, but every time I revisit this deck I get reminded that maybe there's a place for a FIRE deck in the format. After my experience taking it to a tournament for the first time I can say that these thoughts have been reinforced, but there's always room for improvement.I took a lot of inspiration from the standard Cat OTK core, and it can be seen with the inclusion of two Gyaku-Gire Pandas along with Exiled Force and Injection Fairy Lily. Despite this, I still think this is as much of a FIRE deck as it is a Rescue Cat deck. Ideally, I would love to design a "pure' FIRE strategy that can be successful though I realized a while ago that the best way to make worse cards playable is by playing good cards alongside them.With this deck there are two main strategies that can deal a lot of damage on an empty board. And because the setup requires an empty board, I play three copies of Giant Trunade, two copies of Nobleman of Crossout and two copies of Mind Control.The first strategy is to bring two Chimeras (1600 ATK each) plus Baseball Kid (Boosted to 3500 ATK) for 6700 damage. In addition to that, Baseball Kid can tribute both Chimeras to inflict an additional 1000 points of damage. You mainly want to go for this line if you can't afford losing too many life points or have Spirit of Flames as well.The second strategy is to bring two Chimeras plus Cyber-Stein into Master of Oz. On an empty field, this equates to 8100 life points total.In general, you really want to try and set up a game winning shot as soon as possible.For added support, there are UFO Turtles which help bring out Baseball Kid so as to not rely on Last Will all the time. They're also great graveyard fodder for Spirit of Flames.​On a side note, Scapegoat can be annoying to deal with but thankfully you have two copies of Gyaku-Gire Panda. However, this is an area that I believe needs to be explored more thoroughly with this variant, because it's not as effective against these types of matchups.​This deck is fun to play and when it's strong, it's strong. The problem is that it can be vulnerable and really requires a proper setup to win. It's not as flexible as other Cat variants, so I'd definitely say it's worse. I think that both the main and side decks can certainly be tweaked a bit to reveal its max potential.
