Goat Format Championship 11 Deck Tech: Last Turn!
This article details Woawa's "Last Turn" combo deck strategy for Goat Format Championship 11, highlighting its reliance on Jowgen the Spiritualist and Wall of Revealing Light.
Combo decks have had their share of the limelight from time to time. Library FTK and Empty Jar have both had top placements in recent events, including MMF's tied 5th place finish in our world championship event with the latter. Thanks to their complexity, though, these decks can be tiring to pilot. User Woawa decided to enter the tournament with something a little more straight-forward, while still sticking to the combo spirit. His deck of choice? Last Turn!
Deck List
Overview
Last Turn is not a common combo deck to see in modern events. In fact, the last time a deck using the card had any tournament success was back in 2017! Gojira made 2nd place at that year's Max Suffridge Memorial tournament with this Last Turn/Chaos blend. There are an uncharacteristically high number of copies here today, though, so let's look at just what it's trying to do. Traditionally, the deck attempts to focus much more on the actual combo than Gojira's deck did in 2017. This would mean combining Jowgen the Spiritualist with Last Turn in order to win the game. Because Jowgen prevents your opponent from special summoning any monsters, he will be alone on the field when Last Turn resolves. This gives you the win by default!Wall of Revealing Light is another key part of the combo, as it allows you to easily reduce your life total to the 1000 or less required to activate Last Turn. Keeping you alive by preventing your opponent from attacking is just icing on the cake!
Player Insight
When discussing the deck, Woawa mentioned that he worked with fellow Discord member DoomDuck to create the list, who is also piloting the deck in today's event. He even got advice from other players in our discord! It looks like both players opted to maximize deck-thinning, which is a common strategy for combo decks. They apparently decided not to go all-in with turbo spells like Reasoning (which some players do). Thunder Dragon, Dekoichi, and Upstart Goblin are all making an appearance here, instead. Additionally, stall cards like Level Limit - Area B and Gravity Bind help to keep him alive until he can craft his combo. The aforementioned Wall of Revealing Light, plus two copies of Threatening Roar, add to this protection.
Woawa:Cyber Stein is in the side against alt win. It allows me to pull out Balter or Last Warrior From Another Planet in the mid game. I can also win with Last Warrior and Last Turn. Thousand-Eyes Restrict and Last Turn can tie the game as well.This isn't a particularly good alt win deck, in my opinion. However, the lines it takes are quite simple when compared to other alt win decks.
