First seen with its second place finish at the Goat Format Championship Series 2 event, the modern Spirit deck is the brain child of the player Serenity. Susa Soldier, Asura Priest, and Tsukuyomi are the format's best spirits, and this deck brings all three to their maximum potential.
Because spirits return to the player's hand during the end phase, they are almost impossible to kill without battle traps. This deck takes advantage of this, using its monsters as pseudo removal spells until the opponent is left without monster-based protection. From there, it hits hard with Mataza the Zapper to end the game.
Creature Swap is a well known partner to spirit monsters, but Ectoplasmer is much more unconventional. The continuous spell has perfect synergy with the rest of the deck, though, killing opposing threats while the Spirit player's are safe in hand.
Traditional spirit support, like Spiritual Energy Settle Machine are much more rare. Of those that exist, Spirit's Invitation sees some play, and Spring of Rebirth can be found in sideboards from time to time.
Deck List
This is Serenity's GFC2 list. It's worth noting that Creature Swap is missing, as the deck instead opted for a Scapegoat + Metamorphosis package. This gave Tsukuyomi more weight in the deck, able to abuse Thousand Eyes Restrict much like Goat Control.
The high number of battle traps and monster removal are a testament to just how often the strategy passes the turn with an empty board. In a way, though, this works to the deck's advantage, as the traps end up removing anything that takes the bait, eliminating their ability to protect the enemy player from Mataza.

Additional Card Options
Of the remaining spirits, Fushi no Tori is the only that does not require a tribute and is remotely playable. Maharagi and Otohime are potentially useful, but not usually in an aggro deck such as this.
