Goat Format World Championship Qualifier Deck Tech: Thunder Cat Chaos Turbo

The Goat Format World Championship qualifier tournament has begun! Thirty-six contestants ​battle it out for a chance at the World Championship (and the awesome championship belt) later this year! One such warrior is community staple TheNano. Known for his creative deck building, today Nano is proving once again why his name is synonymous with innovation.

Often considered one of the best (if not the best) decks in the format, Chaos Turbo is as popular as it is successful. The key to the deck is Thunder Dragon, which can act as a strong card advantage engine when combined with cards like Graceful Charity, Card Destruction, and other cards which ask you to discard, like Raigeki Break. This strategy is often made more consistent with the addition of the powerful discard fodder Night Assailant.Thunder Dragon also makes it much easier to summon powerful Chaos monsters, like Chaos Sorcerer, which allows the Chaos Turbo player to play more copies of the card than they otherwise might. 

With these engines active Chaos Turbo can quickly overwhelm an opponent with card advantage and threats, while still having a very strong late game.​TheNano's version of Chaos Turbo takes these concepts and turns them up to eleven, as he includes one of the most infamous engines of the format, Rescue Cat, side-by-side with Thunder Dragon. 

Player Insight

It's a strange combination indeed, but one that Nano is confident in. Rather than speculate on the reasoning or strengths of the card choices, we've asked Nano to explain just what the heck is going on with this deck! ​

It's a regular Chaos Turbo deck, running an eight card Cat engine over other dark/flip monsters. Rescue Cat is basically a Thunder Dragon with the DARK attribute when it searches Des Koala plus Wicked Worm Beast. This play gives us a DARK flip for Assailant to grab, or a Chaos monster to summon off of. It also gives Book of Moon an aggressive use. Simply setting Koala turns the Book into a one-for-one when it might be dead or a minus-one. Opening Thunder Dragon plus Rescue Cat with these search targets means a live Sorcerer and Assailant, plus four less cards in the deck. That's something regular Turbo can't achieve without Charity or Card Destruction.The other Rescue Cat play is to search for two Wicked Worm Beast. It's a plus-one play which plays perfectly with the large discard engine, making Raigeki Breaks and such always live in the early game, and increasing the power of Card Destruction or Charity by a large margin. Worms are also nice to attack with and keep hand count high, and they play perfectly with the flips in the deck. They are the great face-down bluffs to catch anti-flip cards, especially game two when facing Mind Control or Creature Swap. ​Koalas have fine enough stats to be playable, and they can crush opposing Thunder Dragon decks or win stalls very easily. All of these give a great amount of potential damage and free threats, which plays well with how the rest of the deck can easily clear boards.
