Beating Goat Control Isn't Good Enough
This 2019 article argues that competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! Goat Format players must adapt their strategies beyond solely focusing on beating Goat Control, as the meta has diversified significantly.
Most people know that Goat Control is not the only deck in Goat Format, and yet many people act like it is. During Yu-Gi-Oh!’s initial revival of Goat Format in 2012, over 90% of the players used Goat Control; the others played various rogue decks that did not gain much traction. In 2019, Goat Control is still the most popular deck in most of the Goat Format sub-communities that you will run into, but it is usually less than half of the total field. It is certainly possible to go throughout a whole tournament without playing against Goat Control even once. If you want to win tournaments, you simply must have a solid gameplan for the other decks in the format.
State of the Goat Format Meta in 2019
The four main pillars of the modern-day Goat Format are: Goat Control, Thunder Dragon Chaos, aggro/anti-meta, and combo/Burn (“alt-win”). Goat Control is the largest of the four pillars, so some players take the stance of focusing on beating Goat Control first and worrying about the rest of the meta later. “Maindeck to beat Goat Control, sidedeck for everything else” is a really outdated strategy for 2019. Worse yet, others might largely ignore the rest of the meta and then complain when they lose to it. These days, you can’t build your deck to beat Goat Control; you need to beat Goat Control and the decks that beat Goat Control. For competitive players, Goat Format is never a “one and done” format. As Goat Format continues to become more mainstream, the metagame will evolve at a faster pace, and you’ll need to be prepared for it. You must continually adjust your main deck, sidedeck, or even your larger strategy in order to counter the new threats that surface. Below, I’ve compiled some tech card ideas as well as entire deck ideas that you may find useful in addressing some of the new strategies that have established a significant foothold in the 2019 metagame.
Tech Card Ideas for Goat Format
Spirit Reaper Spirit Reaper is probably one of the best monsters that almost no one is playing. Both of its effects are quite useful against Reasoning Gate Combo. The dedicated OTK build popularized by Noelle cannot kill through a set Spirit Reaper except through Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning to banish it. Spirit Reaper’s discard effect is useful against any alt-win deck, especially the ones that play Level Limit Area - B/Gravity Bind like Empty Jar, Library FTK, PACMAN, and many Burn decks. Spirit Reaper is also great at walling off aggro decks, as some builds do not play a lot of outs to the card.
